ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -

Formal charges were filed Monday against a 54-year-old man accused of stealing candy, grabbing a store worker by the neck and then crashing his car into a St. Joseph County home.

The county prosecutor's office says on Sunday, an employee of US 31 Tobacco Supply Store on US 933 in Roseland told police he saw a man trying to place king-size candy bars inside his jacket.

When the store clerk confronted the man, the accused robber grabbed the employee by the neck and ran out of the store without paying for the candy.

The suspected candy thief is identified as 54-year-old Alan Nick.

Police officers from St. Joseph County and Roseland chased Nick in his car. Nick refused to stop.

The prosecutor's office says Nick then lost control of his vehicle and allegedly drove head-on into a home on Hollyhock Rd.

Nick faces four charges:

Count I: Resisting Law Enforcement Class D felony
Count II: Theft Class D felony
Count III: Criminal Mischief Class D felony
Count IV: Battery Class A misdemeanor

Nick's bond on Monday was set at $35,000, and he remains in the St. Joseph County Jail.
