1 killed in Berrien County crash
The following release was issued by Lincoln Charter Township Police on Thursday morning:
The Lincoln Charter Township Police reports responding to a fatal traffic crash overnight. Officers were dispatched to investigate a rollover crash on Marquette Woods Road near I-94 at 23:09, on arrival they discovered a 2012 Dodge Durango had struck a utility pole and rolled over. The sole occupant (driver) was trapped inside and deceased. There were no witnesses to the crash itself and the investigation continues, however it is believed it occurred just prior to the call made by a passerby. Evidence at the scene does not indicate any other vehicles were involved.
Officers from LTPD were assisted by the Lincoln Township FD with freeing the victim who was subsequently transported to the Lakeland Hospital by Medic One Ambulance. The Berrien County Sherriff's Department accident reconstruction unit is assisting with this crash as the investigation continues.
Speed appears to be a factor as the speed limit at the crash scene is 30 MPH, and it appeared the vehicle was traveling significantly above that. The driver was belted in, and it is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor.
The victim is identified as Michael Harper (50) of Park Ridge Illinois, notification of his next of kin was made overnight with the assistance of the Park Ridge Illinois PD.
This incident remains under investigation.
