A $50 million development in an already heavily-developed area of Mishawaka's north side could soon become reality.

The Mishawaka City Council Monday night unanimously voted to add 45 acres at the northwest corner of Cleveland and Gumwood into the city.

Local developer Great Lakes Capital Development wants to build restaurants, retail, apartments, assisted living and nursing facilities on the site.

The annexation gives the city the option to ask the developer to extend streets in the future if the city sees a need for it.

A citizens group has a concern that sidewalks are not in the plans along that part of Gumwood. Members of Friends of Granger Paths told the council they would like a sidewalk from the north so pedestrians could access the soon-to-be developed area.

Great Lakes hopes to start construction in the spring.
